E355 is a carbon-manganese precision steel defined by EN 10305-1:2016 (Steel tubes for precision applications — Part 1: Seamless cold drawn tubes). Its material number is 1.0580. In the honed-tube trade it is the same steel as the legacy German grade ST 52-3 / St 52 and the structural grade S355; only the standard family and the delivery condition change, not the chemistry. When you order "E355 honed tube" you are ordering a cold-drawn seamless tube whose bore — not its outer diameter — is the controlled, finished dimension.
The figures below are the practical ordering envelope. The first column is the EN 10305-1 scope; the others are the commercial envelope most mills and traders actually quote.
| Dimension | EN 10305-1:2016 scope | Typical commercial range | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outside diameter (OD) | ≤ 380 mm | 30–450 mm (some mills to 500+) | Above 380 mm, the certificate basis shifts to EN 10297-1 |
| Bore (ID) | — (set by OD & wall) | 30–500 mm (1.5–20 in imperial) | Bore is the finished, tolerance-controlled surface |
| Wall thickness | 0.5–25 mm typical | 4–50 mm for honed barrels | Thin walls (≤ 4 mm) need a fixed absolute tolerance |
| Length | random / exact per order | up to 12 m, cut to length | Standard random length 6 m |
The bore is finished to ISO 286-2 hole (H) classes. Every class is specified as +tolerance / 0: the bore is never undersize, which protects the sealing surface. H8 is the default for cylinder barrels; H7 is for precision guide bores, H9/H10 for bores that are machined again after welding or for non-sealing service.
| Bore diameter range (mm) | H7 (+0/0) | H8 (+0/0) | H9 (+0/0) | H10 (+0/0) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| up to 30 | +0.021 | +0.033 | +0.052 | +0.084 |
| > 30 – 50 | +0.025 | +0.039 | +0.062 | +0.100 |
| > 50 – 80 | +0.030 | +0.046 | +0.074 | +0.120 |
| > 80 – 120 | +0.035 | +0.054 | +0.087 | +0.140 |
| > 120 – 180 | +0.040 | +0.063 | +0.100 | +0.160 |
| > 180 – 250 | +0.046 | +0.072 | +0.115 | +0.185 |
| > 250 – 315 | +0.052 | +0.081 | +0.130 | +0.210 |
| > 315 – 400 | +0.057 | +0.089 | +0.140 | +0.230 |
EN 10305-1 defines two wall-tolerance grades. The standard grade is adequate for most barrel tubes; the precision grade is used where wall uniformity drives the pressure rating.
| Grade | Wall tolerance | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | ±10 % of nominal, or ±0.1 mm, whichever is greater | Default for honed barrels |
| Precision | ±5 % of nominal (formal EN grade) | Tight wall control; high-pressure or thin-wall sizes |
By agreement, wall tolerance may be replaced by a fixed absolute value (e.g. ±0.2 mm), which is the sensible choice for very thin walls where a percentage becomes meaningless.
For honed / cylinder tubes the bore is the controlled dimension; the OD is held to a commercial band so the tube can be machined, welded or chromed on the outside. EN 10305-1 also offers a precise and a normal OD class — confirm which one your supplier quotes.
| Outside diameter (mm) | Typical commercial OD tolerance (±) |
|---|---|
| ≤ 40 | 0.15 |
| > 40 – 60 | 0.25 |
| > 60 – 100 | 0.40 |
| > 100 – 160 | 0.50 |
| > 160 – 250 | 0.80 |
| > 250 – 400 | 1.50 |
| Property | Honed finish | Skived & roller burnished (SRB) |
|---|---|---|
| Bore roughness Ra | 0.2 – 0.4 µm | 0.05 – 0.2 µm |
| Cross-hatch angle | 30° – 45° | 30° – 45° |
| Straightness | ≤ 0.5 mm/m (local) | ≤ 0.5 mm/m (local) |
| Outer surface | smooth cold-drawn | smooth cold-drawn |
EN 10305-1 base straightness for precision tubes is 1.0 mm/m; honed and SRB finishing typically holds the tighter 0.5 mm/m local deviation quoted above. The 30°–45° cross-hatch is functional — it retains lubricating oil on the bore and is not a cosmetic mark.
E355 is supplied in several delivery conditions, and the delivery condition sets the yield strength. The cold-worked states (+C, +LC) quote tensile strength and elongation only; the yield is derived from the tensile by the ratios shown. Stress-relieved (+SR) and normalized (+N) give a fixed minimum yield.
| Delivery condition | Rm min (MPa) | ReH min (MPa) | A min (%) | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| +C (cold drawn / hard) | 640 | ≈ 0.8 × Rm | 4 | Yield derived, not separately guaranteed |
| +LC (cold drawn / soft) | 580 | ≈ 0.7 × Rm | 7 | Yield derived |
| +SR (stress relieved) | 580 | 450 | 10 | ≥ 420 MPa for OD ≥ 160 mm |
| +A (annealed) | 450 | ≈ 0.5 × Rm | 22 | Yield derived |
| +N (normalized) | 490 – 630 | 355 | 22 | −10 MPa for OD ≤ 30 mm & wall ≤ 3 mm |
Cast-analysis limits from EN 10305-1:2016 Table 2 (maximum unless a minimum is shown). Product analysis carries a permitted deviation — judge a mill certificate against the upper limit plus that deviation.

Approximate weight (kg/m) ≈ (OD − Wall) × Wall × 0.02466. This is a screening figure, not a tolerance value.
| Class | What it costs | Reasonable when |
|---|---|---|
| H8 | No premium at most sizes | Standard barrel; piston seals run directly on the bore (the normal case) |
| H7 | More stock removed, higher rejection rate | Interference fits or precision guide bores where the seal package is dimensionally critical |
| H9 | Slightly cheaper, wider band | Bore will be finish-machined after welding, or a liner/sleeve is fitted |
| H10 | Cheapest honed class | Non-sealing cylinders or telescopic stages with separate wear rings |
Per EN 10305-1:2016 the standard covers outside diameters up to 380 mm; most suppliers offer honed bores from about 30 mm to 500 mm (imperial bores 1.5 in to 20 in), wall thickness 4–50 mm, and lengths up to 12 m, cut to length on request.
The bore is finished to ISO 286-2 hole classes. H8 is the standard class for cylinder barrels; H7 is supplied for precision guide bores, and H9 or H10 for bores that are finish-machined after welding or for non-sealing service. All classes are +tolerance/0 (the bore is never undersize).
Stress-relieved (+SR, BKS) gives ReH at least 450 MPa (at least 420 MPa for OD 160 mm and above); normalized (+N, NBK) gives ReH at least 355 MPa. The cold-worked states (+C, +LC) quote tensile strength only, with yield derived from it. For barrel tube, +SR is the workhorse condition.
The standard grade is plus/minus 10 percent of nominal wall, or plus/minus 0.1 mm, whichever is greater; a precision grade of plus/minus 5 percent is also defined. For very thin walls a fixed absolute tolerance (for example plus/minus 0.2 mm) is agreed instead.
Yes. E355 and ST 52-3 are the same carbon-manganese steel under material number 1.0580. E355 is the current EN 10305-1 designation; ST 52-3 is the legacy DIN name still found on old drawings and specifications.
